Biography

Since his first prize in the international ARD competition in Munich in 1986 Reinhold Friedrich has been present on the important stages of the national and international music scene. He studied at the "Staatliche Hochschule für Musik", where he is profossor since 1989. His spectrum goes from the latest solo compositions to ancient music and its historical original instruments, such as the baroque trumpet and the keyed trumpet.Reinhold Friedrich is a professor of trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. He holds the title as a honorary professor at the Royal Accademy of Music in London, visiting professor at the Royal Accademy of Music in Aarhus (Danmark) as well as at the Elisabethen-Hochschule für Musik in Hiroshima (Japan).

As a solo player, he gave concerts with ensembles such as Berliner Barock-Solisten, Cappella Istropolitana, Franz-Liszt-Kammerorchester, Wiener Kammerorchester and Zürcher Kammerorchester. Furthermore with Bamberger Symphoniker, Orchestre Philharmonique de la Radio France, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Sinfonieorchester des Norddeutschen Rundfunks. These performances were conducted by Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkov, Peter Eötvös, Vladimir Fedossejew, Neeme Järvi, Ingo Metzmacher, Jonathan Nott, Leif Segerstam and Hans Zender.

Since its founding in 2003, Reinhold Friedrich is a permanent principal trumpet of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado and artistic director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Brass Ensemble.

His permanent partners in the field of chamber music are Robyn Schulkowsky (percussion), Thomas Duis and Kalle Randalu (piano), as well as Martin Lücker (organ), Albrecht Mayer (Oboe), Thomas Quasthoff (Bass) und Ruth Ziesak (Sopran). One main objective of Friedrich is to perform the works of contemporary composers like Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Hans Werner Henze, Luca Lombardi, Benedict Mason, Hilda Paredes, Wolfgang Rihm, Rebecca Saunders as well as Johannes Caspar Walther and Herbert Willi. Friedrich published a vast number of CDs mainly under the label Capriccio.

Soloparts as there are “Nobody knows the trouble I see“ by Bernd Alois Zimmermann and „Irene“ by Herbert Willi are for him extremely important parts of his wide-ranging repertoire Numerous recordings with labels like: Deutsche Grammophon, Denon, and above all Capriccio, now Phoenix, give evidence of his comprehensive work. The latest recordings „Trumpet and organ“ with the organist Iveta Apkalna, and „Assisi Christmas Cantatas“ with Ruth Ziesak, Ingeborg Danz and the ensemble “L’ Arte del Mondo“ were published by Phoenix.

In 2012 Reinhold Friedrich will be playing among other engagements in London, Tel Aviv, Vienna, Lucerne, Bolivia and Brazil. In February, he will perform “l´histoire du soldat" together with Janine Jansen in the Wigmore Hall, London. After that Reinhold Friedrich  presents  the Mess in b-minor of J.S.Bach with the Capella Andrea Barca, the conductor András Schiff and the Strathclyde Concerto of Peter Maxwell Davies Nr. 3 for trumpet, horn and orchestra with the Musikkollegium Winthertur. This concert as well as the concert with the EUYO will be heard in April. In May Reinhold Friedrich will play the second Brandenburg concert, accompanied by the Capriccio Basel and in July he will be invited at the Schleswig Holstein Festival where he will perform the concert for two trumpets and orchestra by Matthias Pintscher (world premiere). With Claudio Abbado and the Lucerne festival orchestra he will be heard with the 1. Symphony of Bruckner in Vienna and Budapest.

A concert tour together with Ruth Ziesak and the Württembergischen Kammerorchester Heilbronn will be taken place through Germany and Switzerland.

Master classes will be held by Reinhold Friedrich at the Royal Academy of London, the Royal Conservatory in Aarhus, as well as in Lubliana, Silico, Ochsenhausen, Senlis and Hiroshima.

The regular cooperation with the Bologna Mozart orchestra in Italy and his membership in the Lucerne Festival Orchestra with maestro Claudio Abbado will be continued in 2012.
